There are three stages of gum (periodontal) disease: gingivitis, periodontitis and advanced periodontitis.

Gum Disease Severity

The severity of gum disease can vary from person to person, depending on how long the infection has been present and if any forms of treatment have been performed. While it is important to visit a periodontist no matter the severity, seeking treatment as early as possible can help prevent permanent damage and restore your health.

Gingivitis Red, puffy gums due to a build-up of plaque. You may notice bleeding when you floss or brush, or have persistent bad breath. At this stage, gum disease can be reversed as soon as the bacteria have been properly removed.

Periodontitis Inflammation has started to spread to the surrounding tissues of your tooth and early bone damage has begun at this stage. The surrounding tissues have been irreversibly damaged, as the deterioration of your soft tissues start to create ‘pockets’ of bacteria around your teeth. Your gums may start to separate from your teeth forming gaps. You must seek treatment to prevent further damage.

Advanced Periodontitis Bacteria has been allowed to grow and spread to destroy the supportive fibers and bone around your teeth. The bacteria pockets are much deeper. Your teeth could start to shift and feel loose. Your bite may also be affected. At this stage you must see a periodontist to save your teeth and bone.

She attended the University of Puerto Rico for her Bachelor’s degree in Biology, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. After completing her undergraduate, she earned her degree as Doctor of Dental Medicine from the University of Puerto Rico Dental School where she graduated in the top of her class.
